Abusing Power with Spy Cams

Who wouldn't like to be Big Brother? To become the all-seeing, controlling god of all? Well, maybe not "controlling god of all" but being the all-seeing individual would be just as potent, don't you believe so? That can be one basis why there are many concerns when it comes to using hidden spy cameras, assault of privacy being one of these. Power is basically something that everyone abhors and, ironically, everybody likes. Spy cams, while they are a benefit to a specific individual, may be very hurtful to the other. They can be a significant tool or something that will put you down.

There is this one situation involving a professor who utilized a hidden camera disguised as a button to film mischevious students in school. The students and their families have filed cases against the said professor for "misusing her authority" as well as filming the students without their permission. Indeed, it was illegal for the teacher to do it, but if we evaluate the other manner, we may see that what the teacher was practically doing was exposing these behavioral matters to the public so that they may be addressed appropriately. I am somewhat sure that the Virginia Tech accident is still new on all people's minds. Such behavioral propensities could have been recognized earlier and subsequently prevented the incident from occurring. If a concealed spy camera is what it takes to prevent such tragic occurrences, then I will not mind teachers filming their students at school in any way.

Still there are also a number who abuse the benefits of hidden video cameras. I will assume everyone is aware of issues of shocking actions caught on video that are being used to blackmail an individual. Or those that blatantly invades other person's privacy as in putting hidden cameras in places wherein surveillance isn't necessary, such as the bathroom or personal quarters for purposes of personal gratification or malicious intent. Stalking utilizing spy video cameras is also another form of abuse of this technology.

Still there is one thing that shocks me. A couple of homeowners utilize nanny cameras to check their baby-sitters as well as house maids while they are away. And these nannies are not conscious of the existence of the spy cam till they get caught doing some monkey business and dealt with about it. Yet no one appears to be complaining. If they get caught abusing a child or doing something inappropriate, the issue of the nanny's right to privacy is never raised. It is because the owners have the power to do whatever they want to secure the family and the house helper did something incorrect.

Thus, when is the utilization of hidden surveillance cameras justified and when is it not? Seemingly, the thin red demarcation dividing them is a lot thinner than we thought. When the one utilizing the surveillance camera is in authority, its utilization is justified. Nevertheless, if choosing to use concealed spy cams will make us safer, then I'm for it. Besides, why would I worry about it when I'm not doing anything that's against the rules or is morally wrong? But as long as they maintain well behind the line, it won't be an issue.
